St. Mary’s Academy and St. Mary’s Academy Foundation Volunteer Program

St. Mary’s Academy, established in 1869, is a Catholic school in the tradition of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. Our legacy of learning, faith, service, and leadership defines the Academy as a distinguished girls’ school where students graduate empowered with knowledge, aware of their gifts, possess a desire for excellence in all endeavours, and embrace a sense of social responsibility to use their abilities in the service of others. Volunteers play a vital role in fostering this legacy, enriching our students’ experiences and strengthening our community.

Opportunities to volunteer include:

  • School Activities: assist with the drama production, coaching, supervising sporting and school events and activities, and more. 
  • Parents’ Guild: work in the Corner Store, help with International Day, raffles/lotteries, and other special events, or provide hospitality for school activities
  • SMA Foundation: sit on organizing committee for gala dinners, auctions, and other fundraising events and appeals, help in the archives/heritage collection, or volunteer to support alumnae engagement.

To volunteer, please email smavolunteers@smamb.ca and specify your areas of interest. If you're unsure about where you'd like to get involved, that's perfectly fine—our volunteer coordinator will assist in finding the right fit for you.

Requirements for Volunteering:

To ensure a safe and welcoming environment, SMA requires the following certifications and acknowledgements. SMA will cover associated costs.

  • Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search (completed within the last five years)
  • Child Abuse Registry Check (completed within the last five years)
  • Respect in School Training (required for anyone in contact with students; completed within the last five years)
  • Respect in Sport Training (mandatory for all coaches; completed within the last five years)
  • SMA Volunteer Policy or Athletic Coaches acknowledgement (renewed annually)
