Pink Shirt Day

Globally, Pink Shirt Day takes place on Wednesday, February 22. This year's theme is "Be Kind and Lift Each Other Up". At SMA, we dedicate February 22 to Ash Wednesday and will honour Pink Shirt Day on Thursday, February 23. Students are encouraged to wear a pink shirt with their regulation uniform to show their support of bullying prevention. Our Peer Support Team will host an awareness campaign aimed at preventing bullying and the Team will host a bake sale on Friday, February 24 with proceeds going to Kids Help Phone. kidshelpphone.ca.

 

Pink Day began in Nova Scotia in 2007 when two grade 12 students, David Shepherd and Travis Price, chose to take action against bullying behaviour after ninth grade student Chuck McNeill was bullied for wearing a pink shirt during the first day of school. Their actions sparked a world-wide movement shedding light on the issues surrounding bullying and inspired others to speak out against bullying.
