Saturday, September 30
Annually on September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is observed. This occasion honours the children who did not make it back home and the survivors of residential schools, along with their families and communities. Concurrently, Orange Shirt Day takes place on the same day. Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC in the spring of 2013. It grew out of Phyllis' story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of Residential Schools happening annually. Orange shirts are worn as a symbol of solidarity with our indigenous sisters and brothers and to promote the importance of, “Every Child Matters”.
