Since our founding in 1869, St. Mary’s Academy has upheld the tradition of a school uniform—beginning with humble black dresses and evolving into the distinct tartan we know today.
Today’s SMA uniform features our patented tartan kilt, a meaningful design woven with the colours of every uniform in the Academy’s history. This connects each generation of students through our shared legacy of learning, faith, and service.
Students are expected to be well-groomed and wear their full uniform during school hours. Beyond dress code, the SMA uniform fosters a strong sense of belonging to the Academy community, reminding each student that she is part of something greater than herself.
Regulation
Uniform
The regulation uniform may be worn all year. It consists of a blue plaid kilt, white oxford button down collar shirt with short or long sleeves, navy knee socks, navy tights or navy panty hose, and navy or black dress shoes. No canvas shoes, runners, boots or sandals. Shoes must have a closed toe, closed back and a heel height of less than 4 centimeters.
Students may also purchase a regulation sweater, available in cardigan, pullover or sleeveless vest, and a regulation tie.
Students must wear full regulation uniform to all Mass celebrations.
Summer
Options
Students may choose the following options from May 2 to Thanksgiving.
- Regulation white or navy polo shirt with SMA logo (polo shirts may be layered)
- Navy regulation summer skirt, maximum 6 centimeters above the knee. Worn with navy knee highs and regulation shoes.
- Regulation school issued navy or grey pants, properly hemmed.
Optional Items
Students may choose to wear regulation school issued navy pants with a white uniform blouse and regulation shoes. Students may choose to purchase a regulation SMA Blazer (Grades 9-12 only).

The regulation uniform may be worn all year. Casual Days
Throughout the year students enjoy several casual days when they're not required to wear the uniform. On casual day, students and staff are asked to make a $2 donation to wear casual clothing. All proceeds benifit organizations that are either managed or supported by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. The following clothing items are not permitted:
- transparent clothing
- tank, halter or tube top
- flip flops
- exposed midriff
- short shorts
- mini-skirt
Gently used items are recyclable in the School Office.
